Opened to the public in 1929, the Molitor Swimming Pool introduced Parisians to the joys of outdoor recreation and swimming long before the era of paid vacation, offering them two pools—one for summer, the other for winter, with the former cleverly transforming into an ice rink as soon as the first cold snap arrives.
Designed by architect Lucien Pollet, it is famous for its Art Deco decor and its stained-glass windows by Louis Barillet.
It closed in 1989 and was subsequently squatted by street artists, who covered it in graffiti. Listed as a historic monument, a project to reopen it was launched in 2011, combining the authenticity of the original site with a lavish 124-room hotel, a restaurant, a bar, and a rooftop terrace, all designed in a seaside style. The complex is sometimes called the “white ocean liner,” a nod to the cruises of the early 20th century, with portholes in the rooms overlooking the pool and small blue beach cabanas making a comeback around the pool. The new Molitor Pool opened on May 19, 2014, after two and a half years of construction.
