Passy

The municipality of Passy, most of which was annexed to Paris in 1860, was separated from the municipality of Auteuil by Rue de Boulainvilliers and Rue de l’Assomption.

While Passy’s population stood at 1,700 in 1800, it grew rapidly with the development of new neighborhoods and the construction of new streets during the Second Empire (Haussmann), reaching nearly 17,600 in 1856, the last known figure, since Passy was subsequently incorporated into Paris on January 1, 1860.

Passy

In 1658, Claude de Chahu, advisor to the king and treasurer general of finance, acquired the seigneurial castle of Passy (or from Boulainvilliers). In 1666, he attempted to elevate the modest church, which was under the jurisdiction of Auteuil, to the status of a parish, citing the difficulties faced by the faithful of Passy : “The difficulty they had in attending the major church services at the church in Auteuil because of the poor road and the flooding that sometimes occurred there, as well as the quarrels and animosities among the residents ofAuteuil "…and their parish priest was taking action against them…" The Archbishop of Paris granted permission, and the Notre Dame de Grâce Chapel was built, enabling Passy to become a separate and independent parish in 1672.

It was during the construction of Rue des Eaux, around 1650, that the first mineral springs in Passy were discovered. Tapped by the local lord, Claude Chahu, these waters—said to be “healing”—did not enjoy the success that had been hoped for.
